Dhaka, Delhi sign deal tomorrow

The government will sign an agreement tomorrow (Sunday) with New Delhi for duty-free import of 8.0 million pieces of Bangladeshi readymade garments (RMG) by India annually.
Abdul Wahab, joint secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Ajit Gupte, economic minister of Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, will ink the deal on behalf of the respective sides at the Ministry of Commerce in Dhaka, ministry sources said.
Feroz Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Pinak Ranjan Chawkrabarty, Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, and other stakeholders are expected to attend the signing ceremony.
A meeting of the Council of Advisers of the caretaker government, presided over by chief adviser, Fakhruddin Ahmed, on August 28, approved the proposed deal.
The Indian government will allow Bangladesh to export RMG to its market under the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) system in line with the purview of South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement.
The offer had been made during the 14th summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in New Delhi and was firmed up during a subsequent visit of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Dhaka.
