Dhaka is the third most air polluted city in the world in terms of total suspended solids (TSP) concentration, caused by emissions from motor vehicles and brick kilns.
It was revealed in an international seminar on "Air Pollution: Perspective Dhaka", held in the city Saturday.
The Franco Bangladeshi Association of Scholars and Trainees (FBAST) and the French Embassy in Bangladesh jointly organised the seminar.
"The situation has deteriorated further as a result of high economic growth, increase of vehicles on roads, and higher rate of emissions," said Zia Wadud, assistant professor of Civil Engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
A number of old motor vehicles, thousands of brick kilns around the city, dust from roads and construction sites, and toxic fumes from industrial units are the major sources of air pollution in the city, he explained.
Presently monitored air pollutants are lead and other heavy metals, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, suspended particulate matter, ozone and other photochemical oxidants. Yet emissions of dioxins and furans are not monitored in Bangladesh, which is internationally stringent.
