CHITTAGONG, May 19: Members of the delegation of Ranong Port of Thailand and Chittagong Port officials emphasised today the need for direct shipping services between the two ports and signing of a coastal shipping agreement between the two governments.
They said that both the governments can ink an agreement like the one Bangladesh and Myanmar have signed recently.
They said that the two brotherly countries maintain excellent bilateral relations and in the light of that both the countries can sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) following which authorities in the two ports will take necessary steps for direct shipping services.
The views were exchanged during the official visit of a high- powered delegation headed by the Governor of Ranong province of Thailand Sub Lt Cherdsak Jampathes in the Chittagong Port.
The 17-member delegation of Thailand held a meeting with the Acting Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority Md Nazrul Islam and other members and senior port officials on Monday afternoon. They also inspected the cargo handling activities in the jetties.
It may be recalled that Thailand constructed a sea port at Ranong province in the year 2006 which is interested to launch direct shipping services with the Chittagong Port.
Acting Secretary of the CPA Omar Faruque said the delegation comprises the officials of the Ranong Port and Ranong Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries.
CPA Member (harbour and marine) Commodore M Shahjahan gave detailed presentation on the activities of the Chittagong Port. Commercial Advisor of Thailand Jashim U Ahmed gave details on the activities of the Ranong Port.
