The 20th Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) concluded on Tuesday, with manufacturers receiving export orders worth Tk 950 million (95 crore).

This year export orders at DITF increased by more than 18 per cent from the previous year's Tk 800 million.

"We have been very successful in receiving export orders at DITF despite countrywide blockade", Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said while speaking as the chief guest at the fair's closing ceremony.

He said the blockade could not take toll on local and international customers at DITF as a large number of visitors came to the fair.

He said the trade fair is a platform for local and international participants as they can build up business relations with their global counterparts.

He said the trade fair is an international event; as a result the local and international participants can show their products which helps to expand business.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce M Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon and Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed were also present at the ceremony, chaired by Vice-Chairman of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Shubhashish Bose.

Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said a good number of foreign customers come to the trade fair and place orders to local companies which helps boost export.

The 41-day-long 20th DITF started on the first day of 2015 and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated it at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.

Every year the DITF is usually held for 31 days but this year the government extended the duration by 10 days as per the demand of the participating companies.

Apart from Bangladesh, about 14 countries including India, Pakistan, China, Malaysia, Iran, Thailand, the USA, Turkey, Singapore, Australia, Britain, the UAE, South Korea and Germany showcased their products this year.

The local and international participants put on display a wide range of products including textile and garments, leather and leather goods including footwear, machinery equipment, pharmaceutical products, carpets, chemical and allied products, cosmetics and beauty aids, dairy products, electrical and electronic items, food stuff, gift and novelty items, handicrafts, household appliances, furniture, building materials, sports goods, sanitary ware, toys and stationery items, watches and jewellery.
