DMCH patient, who came alive, dies

FE Report | December 06, 2014 00:00:00

The unidentified female patient, who was found alive three hours after being declared dead by the doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday, died on Friday there, officials said.

Her body is now being kept at mortuary, as none came forward to receive remains of the dead person until filling of the report at around 8:00 pm.

"The unidentified woman (45) died at around 4:00 pm on Friday," DMCH deputy director Md Musfiqur Rahman told the FE.

"We will keep her body for 48 hours. If we don't get anyone to hand it over, we will arrange her burial with the help of Anjuman Mofidul Islam."

Meanwhile, the hospital authority has formed a four-member committee on the day to investigate the incident. Prof Enamul Karim is leading the probe team.

"The committee will submit report within the next 3 working days," Mr Rahman said.

DMCH will submit the report to the Ministry of Health and Family Planning for taking necessary actions.

"If negligence of any doctor is found in treatment of the woman, s/he has to face punishment," he added.

The unidentified woman was admitted to DMCH at 12:00 noon on Tuesday. She was unable to speak, and was kept at Medicine Unit-7 of Ward No-802 of the hospital's new building.

The woman had no attendant, and she was not provided any treatment other than an intravenous saline drip and some injections, some patients of the ward alleged.

One doctor said she did not regain her consciousness fully, but was moving her limbs at times until 11:30pm on Thursday.

The woman was found lying on the footpath near the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday, when a drive was being carried out to evict illegal roadside shops adjacent to the hospital's emergency unit.

The DMCH officials, present during the eviction drive, admitted her to the hospital.
