Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arranged a coordinated traffic system for the first time for smooth movement of outbound and inbound passengers of the capital ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters at his office, DMP Commissioner Naim Ahmed Sunday said under the new system, DMP officials would stay at different strategic points with wireless sets helping ease traffic congestions amid a mad rush.
Traffic congestion becomes very critical at several points, including Sitalakhya Bridge, Narayanganj crosssing on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, Gazipur crossing, Tongibazar and Bypile crossing with large numbers of vehicles carrying Eid-time home-goers leaving the capital or coming in.
The DMP commissioner already sat in a meeting Sunday with high police officials of Narayanganj, Gazipur and Dhaka districts to discuss the matter of coordinating the traffic system.
He expressed hope that the new system would help ease vehicular movement through reducing traffic congestions.
Replying to a question, Naim Ahmed said police have been providing three-phase security on the eve of Eid. So far, 4,500 uniformed police, 14 Detective Branch teams of women and 20 civil teams of the Detective Branch have been put on vigil in the capital under the first phase since the first of Ramadan to check extortion, mugging and other kinds of crimes. It will continue till the day before Eid, he said.
In the second phase, police would be deployed at Eidgahs and cinema halls to avert any kind of sabotage on the Eid day, Naim Ahmed said.
He, however, dismissed any threat of subversive acts on the Eid day. Some 1,000-1,500 police would be deployed for 7 days from after the Eid day and there would be an arrangement for 100 check-posts so that those check-posts could be set up within 15 minutes to check burglary in houses, shopping malls and shopping centres during the time.
About the upcoming Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community, the DMP commissioner said police guards would be deployed near altars as part of its security measures.
