Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has formed a three-member search committee, under the leadership of a joint commissioner, to find out clues behind the sudden 'disappearance' of BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, officials said.
As per the latest move of the city police authority, DMP joint commissioner (crime and operations) Meer Rezaul Alam will lead the body to search the BNP leader, who has been missing since March 10.
Other members of the committee are Iqbal Hossain, deputy commissioner of DMP Uttara division, and Shaikh Nazmul Alam, a DB deputy commissioner.
When contacted, DB Deputy Commissioner Shaikh Nazmul Alam said the team will gather information about the apartment owner as well as how and when the incident occurred.
"We'll also collect information as much as we can about people who took him away and whether Mr. Salahuddin was really abducted or it is for something else," he added.
The move came following allegations from the victim's family and BNP-led 20-party alliance that members of the law-enforcement agencies picked up the BNP leader from an apartment in the capital's Uttara area on March 10. Since then, he remained missing.
BNP Chairperson and chief of the 20-party alliance Khaleda Zia in a statement on Sunday warned the government of dire consequences, if it does not return Salahuddin Ahmed to his family or produce him before court.
In the statement, she also raised finger to the law-enforcers, saying that the government has been using the security forces against leaders and activists of her party before making them victims of enforced disappearance.
Meanwhile, former president and Bikalpadhara Bangladesh chief AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury in a reaction over the disappearance said the government should step down, if it fails to find out the missing BNP leader.
"It is duty of the government to find Mr. Salahuddin and return him to his family members," he told reporters after meeting the grief-stricken family members of the missing BNP leader on Monday morning.
