Police would launch a crackdown on criminals, snatchers and illegal arms from Thursday midnight to curb growing lawlessness in the capital, top Dhaka cop said.
Dhaka police commissioner AKM Shahidul Haq admitted that there have been increasing number of crimes in the capital in the past week that left at least four people dead, scores mugged and injured.
"We will launch a special drive against all types of criminals including snatchers, extortionists, drug peddlers and illegal arm holders," Haq said.
"The law and order has deteriorated in the capital and we hope the drive would improve the situation drastically," he said.
As part of the drive, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) would deploy four patrol teams comprising plain-clothes police officers in each of its 35 police stations to hunt the criminals.
His comments came a day after a garment owner was shot dead in the city in broad daylight while he was taking his grandchildren to school.
Police said extortionists have demanded toll from his garment factory owning son in-law. He was gunned down after the owner failed to pay off the toll.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said in the past week alone as many as 25 manufacturers have received death threats from listed extortionists.
They sought safety from the government and a special industrial police to protect their factories.
Three other people were also killed in the city over the past one-week, with police failing to nab any of the killers.
On Thursday two people were critically injured with gunshots after they were attacked by armed snatchers.
