CHITTAGONG, Mar 22: Sacked dock workers of Chittagong Port staged demonstration today for reinstatement of some 2500 workers who, they said, were selected by a team of government officials nominated by the ministry of shipping.
Other demands included re-introduction of the now dissolved dock workers management board, reopening of dock hospital and introduction of stevedoring system by cancellation of the berth operating system.
Several hundred workers staged sit-in programme in front of Chittagong Port Authority from 11 am to 1.30 pm. A protest meeting was also held there with president of the Dock Bandar Sramik Karmachari Federation Golam Mohammed Chowdhury in the chair.
They stated that the government officials in the shipping ministry had resorted to dilly-dally in spite of the prime minister's assurance regarding the rehabilitation of the workers sacked during the last caretaker government.
The leaders said that they would wait until March 27. Otherwise they would start non-stop agitation from March 28 by halting loading, unloading and other operational activities in the port.
Their next course of action programme includes sit-in in front of Chittagong Press Club on March 24 and 8-hour work stoppage in the port on March 28. Mahfuzur Rahman Khan and Abdul Ahad among others spoke in the protest rally.
