The Power Division will hold a meeting sometime next month with the multilateral development partners to apprise them of the progress in implementation of the ongoing medium-term reforms programme for the country's power sector.
"We are going to discuss the progress in implementation of the 'Three-year Roadmap for Power Sector Reform' sometime in August with the multilateral funding agencies," a senior Power Division official said.
The government adopted the medium-term roadmap in the middle part of last year in line with recommendations of major multilateral donors, including the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The official further said the authorities concerned have already directed the state-owned entities to meet the reforms agenda in order to make them operationally sound and commercially viable.
The Power Division issued the directive in compliance with the recommendations of a high-profile taskforce on implementation of the medium-term roadmap, official sources said.
After reviewing the first year's outcome, the taskforce recently emphasised the need for accelerating the pace of implementation of the reform strategy.
The key objective of the reform strategy is to enhance the operational efficiency of the state-run power entities with a view to making them commercially viable, official sources said.
On its successful implementation, the country's electricity generation capacity is expected to rise by at least 1400 megawatt (MW) by the end of 2008, they mentioned.
According to officials, the roadmap aims to streamline operation, distribution, and transmission of the state-run power agencies.
Corporatisation and commercialisation of the government-owned power entities, strengthening of regulatory framework and building up of private-public partnership are high on the reform agenda, they noted.
