Donors to provide $50m for voter list with photo project

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and seven other donors will provide US$50.4 million worth of fund to the Election Commission (EC) for preparing the voters' roll with photographs for holding a credible election.
To this effect, a tripartite loan agreement was signed between the Economic relations Division (ERD), EC and UNDP in Dhaka Monday, says a press release.
ERD Secretary Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, EC Secretary Md Humayan Kabir and UNDP Country Director Monoj Basniyat signed the deal on behalf of their respective organisations.
The UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and South Korea will provide $50.4 million. The UNDP will act as lead agency.
According to official sources, a total of $84.7 million will be required for preparing the voters' roll. Out of the fund, Bangladesh government will provide $34.3 million.
Under the project, the EC will develop its infrastructure, particularly the ICT, for preparing the voters' roll and train manpower for data-entry operations.
