The country's drug regulator on Sunday ordered inspection of a batch of Napa syrup (Batch No 32113121, Mfg: 12/2021, Expire date: 11/2023) following the alleged death of two siblings in Brahmanbaria.
Napa is a brand name of paracetamol medicine produced and marketed here by Beximco Pharmaceuticals.
As part of the inspection, the state-run Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) directed all divisional and district officials concerned to collect samples of the batch and send those to the National Control Laboratory for testing.
Confirming the development, DGDA spokesman Ayub Hossain said they had instructed the officials concerned to send samples of the batch of Napa syrup from across the country for lab testing.
They, simultaneously, sought explanation of the medicine firm that manufactured and marketed the medicine in liquid form, he said.
Apart from that, two separate probe teams were formed to visit the place where the deaths occurred and to inspect the factory to collect necessary information regarding the sensational incident, according to him.
"The committees were asked to submit the findings by three working days," said Mr Hossain, adding that legal actions would be taken accordingly if anything wrong was found in the medicine.
According to the media reports, two siblings Yasin Khan (7) and Morsalin Khan (4) were given Napa syrup from a local medicine store at Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria, as they had fever.
Family members claimed both the children had fallen seriously ill soon after taking the medicine and had been taken to the District Sadar Hospital.
After providing primary care, the hospital discharged them. Yasin died on the way home, while Morsalin died after reaching home.
On the following day, Brahmanbaria's pharmacy owners association suspended selling Napa syrup in the district.
