Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to resume its academic activities on October 28 after a 66-day closure. Prior to reopening the campus, all residential halls will be opened on October 23.
Meanwhile, Jahangirnagar University (JU) will resume its classes on September 12 (Wednesday) and reopen its halls on September 11 (Tuesday), as the educational institutions are now coming back to normalcy after the recent violence.
The JU syndicate took the decision in an emergency meeting Saturday. Fresh schedules of the postponed examinations of different departments will be declared from the respective departments, said a press release.
At DU, some 630 examinations of different departments and institutes of the university have been postponed due to the long break resulting in a possible five-month session jam for the students.
The decisions came from the meetings of the syndicate and deans' committee of DU Saturday. As per the decision of the meetings, the DU central library, all offices and research centres including hall offices will be reopened today (Sunday).
Emerging out of the meeting, the DU Vice-Chancellor SMA Faiz told reporters that all deferred written-examinations would be taken after reopening the campus but viva voce would be held during the closure of the university.
The fresh timetable for the postponed examinations would be notified very soon, Faiz said adding that easing the looming session jam would be worked out gradually if they could take classes and hold examinations in time after reopening of the campus.
Sources said the activities for the first year honours admission under the academic year 2007-08 would begin during the closure. Admission test would be held in December.
The admission committee will take its final decision in this regard at the forthcoming meeting to be held on September 12.
The government Monday passed the onus of reopening the country's public universities to their respective syndicates after reassessing the situation.
All the 26 public universities including the DU were declared closed sine die on August 23 following a massive students' unrest that ensued from a trifle incident between students and several army personnel at the university playground and spread over to different parts of the country fast.
UNB adds: All colleges in the country's divisional headquarters reopened Saturday following a government announcement.
Reporters of the news agency from all the divisional headquarters said that the authorities of all government and non-government colleges decided to reopen their respective institutions. However, classes in some of those could not take place.
In Rajshahi, all the departments of Rajshahi College, New Degree College, City College and Women's College were reopened following the government announcement, but few students went to classes as "panic was still prevailing among them", campus sources said.
In Sylhet, all colleges, including Sylhet Osmani Medical College, Madan Mohan College, Government College, MC College and Govt Women's College resumed classes after the reopening.
