Dhaka University Syndicate decided to execute government's urgent order for vacating all university dormitories by 8pm Wednesday, reports UNB.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting with acting DU Vice-chancellor Prof. AFM Yusuf Haider in the chair, shortly after the caretaker government ordered immediate closure of all universities and colleges in divisional cities in a bid to stem the tide of campus violence.
The syndicate meeting asked the authorities of the halls to take necessary steps to vacate the dorms by the deadline.
Meanwhile, a section of Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA), defying the army-backed government's urgent orders, urged all DU students to stay on in the halls.
As soon as government's edicts were broadcast in some television channels, DU employees and students, on behalf of the DUTA teachers, boarding ambulances and cars drove through the campus announcing its decision through mike.
Hundreds of students were seen chanting slogans against the government orders and saying they would not leave their dormitories.
But a good number of students started leaving their respective dorms in compliance of the government instructions.
The students, especially the girls, have to face immense sufferings, as there was no transport available in the adjacent areas.
Students expressed strong resentment over the government's order for vacating their halls by 8pm.
"How inhuman…! Now it is 5pm. The government clamped down indefinite curfew on the capital from 8pm. We have only three hours to reach our homes. But no transport is available. Then, how it possible to go home within the time," Arman Aziz, a 2nd-year student of Finance Department, told UNB. Arman hailed from Jamalpur.
