Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has announced his intention to step down, saying the institution has moved beyond the extraordinary circumstances under which he assumed office.

Emphasising stability and continuity, he said the transition would be smooth and free of any administrative vacuum.

The vice chancellor also made it clear that he remains open to staying on briefly, should the government and stakeholders believe continuity is necessary during the handover period.

He made the announcement at a press conference held at the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom of the university on Tuesday.

"I will seek exemption from deputation and return to my main job of teaching at the Department of Development Studies," he said.

Professor Khan noted that the university had successfully overcome the emergency or special circumstances under which he had assumed office, with the support of various stakeholders.

"I now feel that we are at a good stage in discharging our responsibilities, and I want to step down," he said, adding that there is currently no administrative vacuum and that the transition would be smooth.

"If the government and stakeholders feel that continuity requires me to stay a little longer, I am willing to do so," he added.

Professor Khan said he wishes to step down so that an elected political government can organise the university administration in line with its priorities.

"If my cooperation is needed in that process, I am ready at any time," he said.

He also mentioned that he and his team had worked intensively for a prolonged period and that he now needs some rest.
