Durga Puja ends with immersion of images of deities

October 22, 2007 00:00:00

Durga puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, ended Sunday through the immersion of images of deities after five days of festivities, reports UNB.
Deity Durga descended on earth by riding a palanquin (palki) and departed on elephant-back. In Hindu mythology it symbolises that the country will reap abundant crops this year.
The Hindu community observed the concluding day Sunday as Bijoya Dashami and exchanged Bijoya greetings before joining the final pageantry. The day was a public holiday.
A long truck procession with images of Durga was brought out from Dhakeswari temple and dispersed at Swarighat on the bank of the Buriganga in the capital. The procession passed through the main streets of the city. The immersion started at 6 pm.
