A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) Monday challenging the legality of allowing duty-free import of cars for the Members of Parliament (MPs).
A Supreme Court (SC) lawyer filed the writ petition saying that the decision of allowing the duty-free car import for MPs is contradictory to the Articles 7, 19, 26, 27, 31 and 68 of the Constitution.
"Hearing on the legal matter is likely to be held at the HC bench comprising Justice Dr Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain today (Tuesday)," the SC lawyer, Dr Md Eunus Ali Akond, told the FE.
In the writ petition, a rule was also sought from the HC upon government as to why the decision allowing the duty-free import of cars for the MPs should not be declared illegal.
The finance secretary, the communications secretary, the cabinet secretary and the revenue board chairman were made respondents in the petition.
At the same time, the petitioner sought the HC order to the government to maintain status quo over the duty-free car import for MPs until disposal of the rule.
Earlier, Mr Akond sent a legal notice to the government in this connection.
Citing the Constitution's Article 68 "Members of Parliament shall be entitled to such remuneration, allowances and privileges as may be determined by Act of Parliament or, until so determined, by order made by the President," Mr Akond said no such law was made for the duty-free import of cars for MPs.
