The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved Thursday nine development projects with total outlay of Tk 19.65 billion (1965 crore), reports UNB.
The projects are telecommunication network development project (Tk 6.23 billion), roads development project of Faridpur town (Tk 490 million), modernisation of Benapole land port - 1st phase, 1st amendment (Tk 400 million), rehabilitation of Bangladesh railways' Syedpur-Chilahathi section (Tk 1.85 billion), construction of flood shelter in flood and river erosion affected areas - 1st amendment (Tk 340 million), protection of Bhola and Char Fashion towns (Tk 980 million), construction of rural roads, bridges/culverts and other infrastructures in northeastern backward upazilas in Pabna, Sirajganj, Natore, Naogaon, Rajshahi and Bogra districts (Tk 4.25 billion), repair of Zia Fertilizer Company Limited (Tk 4.81 billion), and expansion and development of sericulture in public and private sectors - amendment - (Tk 300 million).
Of the total project costs, the government will provide Tk 14.26 billion while Tk 300 million will be available from Japan Debt Cancellation Fund (JDCF) and Tk 5.09 billion will come as project assistance.
ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.
Later, briefing reporters, Planning Division secretary Habibullah Majumder said that the ECNEC meeting did not approve a proposal for refurbishing assets of Chittagong Steel Mills and Adamjee Jute Mills for converting EPZ's (3rd revised) and sent it back.
He said the Prime Minister asked the jute and textile ministry, and the industries ministry to place a report on the proposal after evaluating the present status of assets of the two mills.
