The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved a project Tuesday, titled 'Padma Water Treatment Plant' involving Tk 35.08 billion to bring water from the Padma River to Dhaka metropolitan area after treating it at Munshiganj, reports UNB.
The approval came from an ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam informed that 12 development projects involving Tk 95.81 billion were approved Tuesday. "Of the total cost, Tk 43.80 billion will come from the national exchequer while the remaining Tk 52.01 billion in project assistance," he said.
Planning Ministry sources said that the water treatment plant will be set up at Jashaldia (Louhajang), Munshiganj for this purpose. The plant would treat 450 million litres of water every day.
On completion of the project, Dhaka WASA would supply additional 450 million litres of water a day. WASA is currently supplying 2,000 MLD water against the demand for 2,200 MLD in the capital.
Exim Bank of China would provide Tk 24.13 billion for the project while WASA itself would provide Tk 0.22 billion. The project is expected to be completed by June, 2016.
The ECNEC meeting approved another project, 'The Construction of National Complex for the disabled, Mirpur, Dhaka', at a cost of Tk 0.84 billion. Under the project, a national centre would be established at Mirpur to provide service to the disabled.
The centre will work as the central complex of district-level service centres for the disabled. It will provide the opportunity to conduct research on disability, special education centre and school complex.
The proposal for establishing National Complex for the disabled was formulated in line with the declaration of the Prime Minister at a function arranged commemorating the 13th National Disability Day and 3rd International Autism Day on April 2, 2010.
