Prices of eggs and vegetables continued to rise over the past week, while rice prices witnessed a slight decline.
Boro paddy harvest has begun in different districts across the country. Millers have started releasing their old stock in large volumes, which has led to a slight drop in prices, traders said.
Prices of BRRI Dhan 28 and Miniket varieties have declined by Tk 4.0-5.0 per kg. BRRI Dhan 28 is being retailed at Tk 66-68 a kg and Miniket at Tk 78-90 a kg.
However, coarse rice is still selling at the previous high of Tk 58-62 per kg in Dhaka.
Limon Hossain, a rice trader at Mohammadpur Agriculture Market, said millers are offloading their old stock to make room for freshly harvested boro rice.
"The stock mostly comprises medium and fine varieties, leading to a slight drop in their prices," he added.
While coarse rice prices have remained unchanged, a decline could be seen within two weeks once the new supply arrives.
On the other hand, vegetable prices have surged due to low supply.
Papaya is now selling at Tk 80 per kg. Traders claim the price hike is due to supply shortages.
A visit to the capital's kitchen markets on Friday revealed that most vegetables were priced at Tk 70-80 per kg.
A vegetable seller said rising prices have reduced the number of papaya buyers.
"It's not the papaya season, and its supply to Dhaka has dropped," he added.
