Saturday saw a real nightmare for commuters as traffic was painfully slow in different parts of Dhaka city.

The heavy pressure of vehicles on roads was mainly due to the mad rush of people for doing shopping.

The Muslims' largest religious festival, Eid-ul-Fitr, is just a week away.

Commuters from different parts of the city faced untold sufferings as traffic remained almost static on the thoroughfares.

Farmgate, Panthapath, Banglamotor, Mirpur Road and Shahbagh were packed with vehicles.

People crossing the busy Paltan and Motijheel areas also suffered a lot amid the mess of traffic.

Rush-hour traffic came to a grinding halt at Panthapath, said Tamim who started for Motijheel from Shankar.

"I had to spend almost two hours and a half to reach Motijheel," he told the FE.

Because of the slow movement of vehicles outside Bashundhara City shopping mall, most of the roads and lanes in the area were packed with traffic.

MA Samad, a resident at Farmgate, said Karwanbazar, Banglamotor and Shahbagh were packed with vehicles.

He was going to the Dhanmondi Hawkers' Market for Eid shopping with his children.

"It took two hours to reach Shahbagh from Farmgate due to the traffic jam," he mentioned.

However, shopping centres and fashion houses were buzzing with Eid shoppers.

Mirpur Road was blocked with traffic as different shopping malls are located in the area. During spot visits to New Market, Gawsia and Chandni Chawk markets this correspondent saw big crowds of customers everywhere.

Traders at Gawsia and Chandni Chawk markets said they were doing good business this year.
