A court in Mymensingh sent to jail eight people, including Zakat donor Nurani Talukder, on Saturday in a case filed in connection with the death of 27 poor people in a stampede while collecting Zakat clothes in the district town on Friday, reports UNB.
The accused are Nurani Talukder alias Mohammad Shamim, owner of 'Nurani Jarda Factory', his son Hedayet and other employees of the factory namely, Iqbal, 40 , Arman, 35, Alamgir, 34, Asadul, 32, Abdul Hamid, 36 and driver Parvej, 35.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahsan Habib passed the order, when police produced them before the court and sought seven-day remand for each of them.
The court also fixed Sunday for hearing the remand prayer.
The eight people were arrested soon after the incident and a murder case was filed in this connection.
A police sub-inspector was suspended on Saturday in connection with the deaths in the stampede.
The suspended police member is sub-inspector Saidul Islam, also in-charge of the No. 2 police camp in the district town.
"He has been suspended for negligence of duty," said Police Super Moinul Haque.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said on Saturday the DMP permission would be required from now on, if any individual or organisation wants to distribute Zakat through any event in Dhaka city.
The DMP Commissioner said this while talking to reporters after distributing Zakat clothes among poor and underprivileged people at the Purana Paltan Community Centre in the city.
The DMP permission has been made mandatory prior to Zakat distribution in the wake of the horrific stampede in Mymensingh that left 27 people dead on Friday morning.
"If any individual arranges any event for distributing Zakat in the capital without DMP permission, the person would be held responsible for any untoward incident, and legal action will be taken against him or her accordingly," the DMP Commissioner said.
About hawker eviction from footpaths, Asaduzzaman said the DMP would start its eviction drive in this regard after Eid.
