The elected directors of the Grameen Bank (GB) have urged the government to refrain from its ‘ill-motive’ on election of directors to the bank's board.
"We hope that the government will stay away from its deep conspiracy over election for the greater interest of around 8.4 million GB members and their families," said GB director Tahsina Khatun on behalf of all other elected directors of the bank.
The GB director issued the statement Friday in reaction to a news item carried in different national dailies that the government is going to form a new board of directors by October 5 next to run the bank.
She said the current directors from the beginning have been opposing the new rules to elect the board of directors of the micro lender.
She said it is now clearly understood that if the government wants to hold general election-type voting among 8.4 million members under 2,500 GB branches, then the whole voting process would face chaos and anarchy will prevail.
"Politics and corruption will creep into the bank. Conflict, spilling of money and blame game will cause divisions and disputes among the GB members, thus breaking discipline in the Nobel award-winning institution," the statement said.
Making a call to the government for stopping its conspiracy against the bank, she said: "Otherwise, all its members together will resist the sinister move to destroy the bank."
