Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed expressed the hope Monday that a capable government, which would be elected through a free, fair election, would take decision on trial of war criminals, reports UNB.
"Let the upcoming election be held in a free and fair manner. I am sure that the elected government will take various decisions in the country's interest, including the trial of war criminals," said the Army chief.
General Moeen said this while talking to reporters after exchanging Eid greetings with the freedom fighters (FFs) at War-injured Freedom Fighters Rehabilitation Centre (WIFFRC) at Mohammadpur in the city.
"It is a matter of humiliation for us that the condition of the FFs, who brought the country's independence, is miserable," he said.
When the Army chief inquired about their condition, Md Farid Miah on behalf of the FFs placed a three-point demand. The demand includes their permanent rehabilitation in the WIFFRC, continuous allowances and introduction of rationing system for them.
General Moeen gave a patient hearing to the FFs and assured them of resolving all problems. He urged the well-to-do section of society to come forward to help rehabilitate the war-injured FFs.
Later, the Army chief distributed essentials among the families of the FFs as Eid gift.
Earlier, General Moeen hosted a reception to a 40-member team of faculty members of various universities, who would leave for Saudi Arabia under the initiative of the Army chief.
The delegation would visit King Khalid University, Nazran University and Jijan University in Saudi Arabia.
Describing the delegation members as ambassadors, the Army chief urged them to put in their best efforts in upholding the country's image abroad.
"The country has plenty of agricultural resources, a thriving readymade garments sector, a promising pharmaceutical sector and a vibrant energy resources, which can be used for development of the country," General Moeen said.
Expatriates Welfare Secretary Abdul Matin Chowdhury, Managing Director of Bangladesh Overseas Employment Services Limited (BOESL) Mahbubur Rahman and high military officials were present on the occasion.
