The National Electricity Week 2014 begins today (Thursday) across the country aiming to create mass awareness among people about electricity saving and ensure customer-friendly services by state-run power entities.
The theme of the programme is 'Bangladesh advances as nation runs with light illuminating' (Jalchhe alo chalchhe desh, agiye jachhe Bangladesh).
President Md Abdul Hamid will formally inaugurate a week-long celebration programme on the occasion at a function at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) at Agargaon in the city.
Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) has undertaken elaborate programmes to observe the electricity week.
Elaborating preparation for the celebration, State Minister for the MPEMR Nasrul Hamid said: "We are observing the National Electricity Week to create mass awareness about the electricity saving and also motivate the organisations under the Power Division to provide better services," he said.
The programme would cover rural areas also and advertisements would be broadcast by national media for raising awareness, he said.
A facebook page was also opened to get feedback from the clients, he added.
Mr Hamid said an inter-university competition would be held for the students to highlight their innovative ideas where power saving and use of renewable energy will get priority.
Under the competition, nine projects out of 60 submitted ones from 22 universities will be displayed in the exhibition.
Besides, nine awards will be given to the best professional workers among the Power Division staff, students, consumers and media for their role in power saving.
Two seminars will be held on private investment in power sector and customers satisfaction on December 12 and December 13.
Besides, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate a three-day scout camp on December 18 to create awareness about power saving.
On this occasion, a fair on electricity equipment and other related businesses will take place on the BICC premises with 97 public and private organisations, including IDCOL, Petrobangla, BERC, Board of Investment, United Group, Orion Group, National Bank and Brac Bank participating in it.
The exhibition will remain open from 10 am to 8 pm every day from December 11 to December 13.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion urging all to be prudent in electricity use.
