Environment certificate for oil tankers recommended

Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forest recommended issuance of certificate from the environment department for the ships that transport crude oil inside the country, reports BSS.

To overcome environment disaster that recently held in the Shela River in Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, the JS committee recommended to keep the Coast Guard and the Mongla Port ready with necessary logistics support, said a Jatiya Sangsad release on Sunday.

The recommendations were put in place at the 10th meeting of the parliamentary standing committee held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee chairman Mohammad Hasan Mahmud in the chair. Committee members Nabi Newaz, M Yahia Chowdhury, Tipu Sultan, Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, M Yasin Ali and Merina Rahman, among others, attended the meeting.

The meeting also discussed effects on the biodiversity and ecology of the Sundarbans which has been created recently due to capsize of an oil tanker in the Shela River in the forest.

High officials from different ministries including joint secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, among others, attended the meeting.
