The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has taken a move to popularise cultivation of organic vegetable so that it could be exported to bring diversification in the country's export products.
The EPB has, meantime, invited a Japanese expert team to visit Bangladesh and conduct a feasibility study for producing organic vegetables in the country.
"We have been assured of a visit by a Japanese delegation during December this year and they will tour different districts for soil tests and impart technical know-how to the farmers," a senior EPB official told the FE Sunday.
Besides, the team is likely to visit the vegetable fields of Brac, Proshika and other non government organisations (NGOs) which have been producing organic vegetables, EPB sources said.
Currently, Bangladesh is exporting different kinds of fresh vegetables to middle-eastern and European countries where Bangladeshi expatriates live.
The earning from export of vegetables was US$ $ 35.64 million in the 2006-07.
EPB officials said Bangladesh can earn Tk 1.0 billion annually by adding organic vegetables to the list of export items.
Sources said Japan is believed to be one of the largest consumers of such products in the world and they acquired technical expertise in this field.
