FE Report
Evitex Polycot Limited (EPL), a joint venture recycled yarn producing plant, was commissioned Tuesday at Mirzapur in Tangail.
This is the country's first ever sophisticated and environment friendly recycled yarn producing plant.
The Bangladesh-Swiss joint venture project has been set up on 15 bighas of land at a cost of around Tk 500 million.
The plant is using locally procured waste garment to produce environmentally friendly yarn that can be used for making denim cloth and other types of home textiles.
The plant will produce around 200 tonnes of yarn a month initially and those will be supplied to the export-oriented factories both at home and abroad.
It will not use any colour or chemical to produce the yarn.
Company sources said fabrics produced by such eco-friendly yarn has huge demand in Europe and other advanced nations.
Adviser of the textiles ministry Md Anowarul Iqbal inaugurated the commercial operation of the plant. Swiss ambassador in Dhaka was also present at the function.
Speaking as chief guest Iqbal said the plant will open up a new window in the textile sector and pledged to promote establishment of more such factories in the country in the interest of environment and export growth.
"I'm really impressed to see the use of such a new technology in our country," he added.
He also said such new product will hopefully get a chunk of international market share and add more value to the local apparel sector.
Speaking as special guest textile secretary Abdur Rashid Sarkar said the government will surely encourage production of such chemical-free yarn as it will protect the environment.
EPL managing director Anowar-Ul Alam Chowdhury said the plant can now meet at least 10 per cent of the country's cotton yarn need.
"The world is now mainly concerned about environment. So, Bangladesh can easily meet at least 10 per cent demand for cotton yarn and help grow its export base as there is huge demand for such yarn and fabrics," he added.
Arnold Karrer, sponsor director of the company, also spoke at the function.
