Ex-MP Helaluzzaman Lalu jailed for 7 yrs in two graft cases

BOGRA, Nov 12 (UNB/ bdnews24.com): Former BNP MP Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu was sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a court here today (Monday) for setting up an unauthorised wireless tower in his house.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 also fined him Tk 0.5 million (5.0 lakh), in default, to suffer simple imprisonment for six months more.
According to the prosecution, police in a raid recovered the unlicenced wireless tower, nine wireless handsets and four equipment from his Sutrapur residence, 'Champa Mahal', in the district town on February 15.
Later, police filed a case with Sadar Police Station in this connection. After investigation, they submitted the chargesheet to the court on March 24.
After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman delivered the verdict.
In another case, Lalu was sentenced to two years' RI for misappropriating government relief materials.
His lawyer Mir Iqbal said they would move the higher court against the verdict.
The former lawmaker, currently serving a one-year jail sentence for misappropriating CI sheets meant for relief, was in the dock when the judgment was delivered.
Lalu was arrested on February 13 this year.
