Expatriate shot dead, two held

BENAPOLE: A group of miscreants shot dead an expatriate in front of his residence in Jashore Sadar upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Meher Ali, son of Sabed Ali, of the same village. He was a Bangladeshi expatriate in Kuwait.
The gory incident took place at 12:30 am in Baziatola  village of Churamankati union of the upazila.
Ali Hossain, brother-in-law of the victim, said Meher came back to Bangladesh on July 24.
Meher went out of his room to padlock the gate of the house at night before going to sleep. But all of a sudden the attackers shot him in the head.
Family members rescued the severely injured expatriate and took him to Jashore General Hospital, but on-duty doctors pronounced him dead.
The body of the deceased was in the mortuary of the hospital till the filing of this report on Saturday afternoon.
Mr Ali suspected that Awami League goons might have killed him as some identified local youths tried to extort Tk 0.5 million from him during the party's just-past regime.
As the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government collapsed on August 05, the victim cheered the fall of the regime in the area.
It might have been a revenge murder. However, Meher was not involved in any politics, according to the victim's relative.
The army men arrested two persons and brought them to the police station in this connection.
Jashore Kotwali police station duty officer SI Akhtar Hossain said he heard about the incident. However, nobody informed him in writing.
