FE REPORT | July 07, 2022 00:00:00

Facebook doesn't spy on user's conversation using mobile microphone to sell data to third-party applications, said a top privacy expert of Meta, the owning company of social media platform Facebook.

"We don't eavesdrop on your conversation using your mobile microphone," Arianne Jimenez, Privacy and Public Policy Manager, APAC at Meta, told a media briefing held at a city hotel.

Replying to a question, Ms Jimenez also said whatever advertisements one sees on Facebook are purely based on user's use, search and preference etc, not prying on privacy.

Arianne Jimenez was speaking at the media briefing on "Meta's Approach to Privacy" through virtual platform.

Fahad Quadir, Policy Communications Lead, Emerging Markets &amp, South Asia, APAC at Meta and Shehzeen Chowdhury, Communications Manager, Bangladesh &amp, Sri Lanka at Meta, were present at the briefing.

Arianne Jimenez said Meta designs privacy controls into Meta products with guidance from experts in areas like data protection and privacy law, security, interface design, engineering, product management and public policy.

"Our privacy team works to build these perspectives into every stage of product development," she added.

She said protecting people's information is central to Meta's vision of being a privacy-focused communications platform. "It is fundamental to how our business works and it's everyone's responsibility at Meta."
