The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) urged the businessmen on Saturday to keep prices of essentials stable during the holy month of Ramadan, reports BSS.
"The country has adequate stock of essential commodities . . . and FBCCI won't allow any irregularities and mismanagement in maintaining supply of products," said a press statement of the FBCCI.
It also demanded that the authorities concerned take stern action against the persons or institutions found involved in storing essentials to create an artificial crisis of essentials for extra profit.
The FBCCI issued the statement with an evaluation report in hand after a joint meeting of the commerce ministry and importers on "The stock and import of essentials ahead of Ramadan".
"Country has a stock of 14.51 lakh (1.451 million) tonnes of edible oil against the demand for 14.50 lakh (1.45 million) tonnes, 16.32 lakh (1.63 million) tonnes of sugar against the demand for 13-14 lakh (1.3-1.4 million) tonnes, 23.55 lakh (2.355 million) tonnes of onion against the demand for 22 lakh (2.2 million) tonnes, 5.56 lakh (556 thousand) tonnes of garlic against the demand for 5.27 lakh (527 thousand),  3.04 lakh (304 thousand) tonnes of ginger against the demand for 3.0 lakh (300 thousand) tonnes, 3.99 lakh (399 thousand) tonnes of lentil against the demand for 3.75 lakh (375 thousand) tonnes, 3.36 lakh (336 thousand) tonnes of chickpea while the demand is 0.60 lakh (60 thousand) and the stock of date is 0.17 lakh (17 thousand) tonnes against the demand for 0.15 lakh (15 thousand) tonnes," the report says.
