The fire at the S Alam Group-owned sugar refinery warehouse in Chattogram persisted for over 24 hours as of the report filing at 9:00 pm.

Due to the flammable nature of sugar's raw materials, complete extinguishment of the fire proved challenging, according to fire service authorities as reported by agencies.

Contrastingly, S Alam Group asserted that the fire would not impact the market, citing sufficient stock availability.

Fire service officials anticipate that it might take two to three days to fully extinguish the blaze.

They said the fire was brought under control on Monday midnight. But from Tuesday morning, the fire inside the sugar mill started burning again.

Deputy Director of Chattogram Fire Service Abdur Razzak said the fire was burning inside the godown at a temperature of 1200 to 1500 degrees Celsius. Fire service personnel are not able to enter the factory because the temperature is high.

Earlier on Monday, the fire broke out in the warehouse of this sugar mill around 4pm. On information, two units of fire service went to the spot and later five more units joined them to control the fire. However, seven more units were added as the fire was not under control.

Meanwhile, members of the army, navy and air force worked with 14 units of fire service to extinguish the fire. Seven firefighting units are currently operating there.

Meanwhile, a seven-member committee headed by the additional district magistrate was formed on Monday night to investigate the incident. Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) and Acting Divisional Commissioner Anwar Pasha formed the committee.

Meanwhile another report adds: The S Alam Group of Industries claims the market will remain unaffected during the fasting month of Ramadan despite the damage to the 100,000 tonnes of raw sugar during a fire at a warehouse owned by the conglomerate in Chattogram.

"The fire erupted on Monday afternoon, but it is still not extinguished. Everyone is trying to put it out. The company has yet to determine the cause and the extent of the damage,'' said S Alam Group General Manager (Commercial) Md Akther Hasan.
