Smoke billowing out of a readymade garment factory in Gazipur on Friday — bdnews24.com A fire broke out on Friday at a readymade garment factory in Jarun area of Konabari in Gazipur owned by Dhaka north mayor.
However, the blaze was brought under control after five hours of operations.
The fire started on the fifth floor of the 10-storey factory building of the knitwear division of Islam Garments Ltd at around 2:00pm, according to Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Some eight fire-fighting units from Joydebpur, Kaliakoir and Gazipur City fire service stations took the fire under control at around 6:50pm.
Initially, the fire service suspected that the fire might have caused by a short circuit.
The incumbent mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam is a director of the garment unit.
However, the extent of loss could not be known until filing of this report at around 8:00pm.
