The fire broke out at 5:15 pm and the firemen successfully doused it by 8:15 pm.
Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) control room official Palsh Chandra Modak made the disclosure to the media.
"On information, 25 units of fire service and civil defence rushed to the spot to extinguish the flames," he said.
Mr Modak further said that the reason behind the fire and the extent of damage could not be ascertained immediately.
According to eyewitnesses, more than 40 shops were demolished in the blaze.
