A woman was burnt to death as a fire broke out at a multi-storey building on Bashbari Mandir Road in the city's Mohammadpur area on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Mabia Begum, 55.

Duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room Lima Khanom told the FE that the fire originated from an electric therapy machine at around 9.13 am on Friday.

The elderly woman died from burn injuries. She was a paralyzed woman.

On information, four firefighting units rushed to the spot and recovered the charred body of the paralyzed woman.

Local people brought the fire under control before the arrival of the firefighting units. The Fire Service men handed over the body to the police.

In another incident in the city's Moghbazar area on Thursday, three people were killed and five others suffered burns as a fire broke out at a garage located on the ground floor of a five-story building.

UNB report from Savar adds: A Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee who suffered burns after coming in contact with a high-voltage electric wire in Ashulia succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Jonayed Hossain Emon, 16, son of Gafur Hossain. He was appearing in the ongoing SSC examination from Anjana Model High School at Kabirpur of Ashulia.

Rezaul Haque Dipu, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, said Emon died at the DMCH around 9am.

Jonayed sustained 90 per cent burns after he came in contact with a 33,000 kV electric wire while crossing a road beneath an under-construction footbridge on the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in the Baikpara bus stand area on Sunday last.

A case was filed against four people in this regard, the OC added. Agitated at the incident, students blocked the road on Tuesday morning. Emon's father Gafur Hossain alleged that his son died because of mismanagement and negligence of the footbridge construction authorities.
