MUNIMA SULTANA | December 16, 2022 00:00:00

The first part of the country's first metro rail will be inaugurated on December 28.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has agreed to open it from Agargaon station.

Road transport and highways division secretary Amin Ullah Nuri confirmed the date through an SMS on Thursday, saying that the inaugural ceremony would be held at Bangabandhu International Convention Centre.

Meanwhile, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader also announced the date from a meeting of his party at Dhanmondi the same day.

The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has already completed all kinds of integrated tests and trial run to start operation of mass rapid transit line-06 from Uttara to Agargaon.

It is 11.7 kilometres of the 21-kilometre line which has stretched up to Kamalapur.

DMTCL managing director MAN Siddique said details about the inauguration would be finalised after getting a letter from the Prime Minister's Office.

But he told the FE that a proposal has been sent to the PM to open MRT-06 at 10:00 am from Agargaon after the inaugural function at the BICC.

Mr Siddique further said that trains will initially be operating for two hours in the morning and two hours at night.

Out of 24 sets of trains, tests of all 19 sets, which reached the depot site, have been completed, according to officials.

But they said the number of trains to be operated would be fixed based on the operational situation.

Mr Siddique further said that a detailed plan of operation would be finalised next week.
