Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Wednesday welcomed the first test-tube baby born under the supervision of its doctors.

Under supervision of the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Chairman, Dr. Jesmine Banu, the neonate is born by caesarean section of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, said a statement.

The infertility of the newborn's parents, residents of Barisal, was diagnosed some 8 years ago.

The couple began their treatment at the BSMMU infertility department in 2022, and after a complete evolution, the department offered the mother IVF with ICSI, a technique of injecting sperm cells into the egg's cytoplasm.

BSMMU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed said the newborn boy and his mother were doing well.

The BSMMU fertility department said that usually 5-10 per cent of infertility patients require the IVF procedure. BSMMU opened the Infertility Department in December 2003. However, it started its services in full swing in 2019, with a disruption during the Covid-19 pandemic.
