Classes of Dhaka University's (DU) first year students start today (Monday).

Most of the first year’s students have been staying in Dhaka on Sunday while some of them have started living in the residential halls of the university. The students told the FE that they are excited about their first class.

"We are happy and it's our pleasure that we will start class after a long time in a new Bangladesh," one of the students said.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad congratulated the first year’s students.

He said in a greeting message that it was a happy day for DU and the students who have secured the opportunity to study in the university.

"I believe you are part of the best talents of Bangladesh. We are also proud to have you. On behalf of the university, I welcome all the new students," the VC said.

"Dhaka University has been progressing through various ups and downs for more than a century. This university has a close relationship with the changes and progress of political-social-cultural history of the country."

The VC said students have been the pioneers of the July-August Anti Discrimination Movement, which has taken Bangladesh to a new juncture in history.

Stating that the critical point of the life of the first years has just begun, Dr Niaz Ahmed said he hopes that the students take every opportunity to develop themselves while focusing on their studies.

Wishing students all the best for their journey ahead, the VC said the natural beauty of the university campus satisfies all the five senses and makes people appreciate life.

"Here multidimensional opportunities for development and expression of talents of the individual occur."

Paying respect to the anti-discrimination activists, the VC said, "Respect and salute to those who were martyred, injured and participated in this revolution."
