CHITTAGONG, Aug 12 (UNB): Five members of a family were killed and eight others injured in a fatal accident as a bus rammed into their microbus in the port city Sunday morning.
Police and witnesses said tragedy struck down the family of an expatriate while they were going to Shah Amanat International Airport here to receive him on his return from Oman.
The deceased were identified as Mallika Khatun (60), her nephew Abu Taiyab, who was driving his own micro, and her granddaughters Joynab Begum (5), Kamrunnahar (17) and Lutfa Begum (7).
Police said the city-bound bus collided with the microbus while Mallika, along with her relatives, were going to the airport to receive her son Abul Hossain, coming from Oman, at about 8.00 am.
"Mallika, Abu Taiyab and Joynab died instantly in the terrible accident," says a spot account of the head-on collision of the two vehicles.
Of the injured, 10 were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where Kamrunnahar and Lutfa Begum died later on.
Joynab Begum was daughter of the expatriate Abul Hossain, while Kamrunnahar and Lutfa Begum were daughters of Abul Hashem, Hossain's brother.
Abul Hossain returned to a grim reception--he couldn't see his mother and daughter and other kins after a long stay abroad.
As he heard about the tragic incident, Hossain burst into tears and fainted at the airport. He was rushed to the CMCH.
Police seized the killer bus, but the driver managed to escape.
