Flood damages dam, inundates 30 villages in Comilla district

COMILLA, June 12 (UNB): Around 30 villages in two upazilas of the district were inundated Tuesday as water rolling down from hills damaged an embankment along the Kankri river.
Locals said the embankment suffered damages at seven points in Ujirpur union of Chouddagram upazila.
They said 25 villages in Chouddagram upazila and 5 in Sadar (South) upazila went under water this morning, leaving over 1 lakh people marooned.
Several hundred houses and crops on vast tracts of land were also damaged. Poultry birds and animals were washed away by the rushing water.
The worst affected villages are Krishnapur, Ashrafpur, Chandful, Manikpur Gatam, Iliaspur, Shamukchhara, Komardoga, Rajeshpur, Chandush, Manikpur, Ramchandrapur, Chandsree, Poranpur, Boraiabari, Paranpur and Kashinagor in Chouddagram upazila and Rajeshpur and Lalbagh villages in Sadar upazila.
Besides, the water level in the Gumti river registered a rise and was flowing 18 cm above the danger level at 8am, sources at the Water Development Board said.
