The capital city experienced relentless rainfall on Monday, severely disrupting the daily life of Dhaka- dwellers.

Meanwhile, the southeastern region of the country, particularly the Chattogram division, is grappling with severe weather conditions, including incessant rain and flooding.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has issued forecasts indicating a high possibility of rising water levels and potential flooding in several areas of Bangladesh within the next three days.

According to the meteorological office, Dhaka on Monday recorded a substantial rainfall of 38 millimetres between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Other areas were also severely affected, with Bandarban showing the highest recorded rainfall of 342 mm, followed by Sunamganj's Moheshkhola with 289 mm on the same day. Chattogram witnessed 154 mm, and Cox's Bazar 113 mm of rainfall till 6:00 pm.

The FFWC further warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southeastern hill basin and adjacent upstream areas, impacting rivers such as Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Karnafuli, Sangu and Matamuhuri. The situation raises concerns about rising water levels and potential flooding.

In the next 24 hours, rivers including Muhuri, Sangu and Matamuhuri in Chattogram, Feni, Bandarban and Cox's Bazar districts are expected to surpass their respective danger levels, exacerbating the flood situation in low-lying regions.

The report indicates that the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are on a rising trend, and this trend is expected to continue over the next three days, starting from Monday evening.

On the other hand, the Ganges-Padma rivers are currently in a steady state and are projected to remain so for the next 24 hours.

All major rivers in the north-eastern region of the country are experiencing a rising trend, with meteorological agencies predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the adjacent upstream areas.

As a result, rivers such as Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Khowai, Sarigowain, Jhalukhali, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someswari and Jadukata may experience rapid rises during the next 24-72 hours.

The report highlights potential flood risks due to the heavy rainfall and rising river levels. Cherapunji and Agartala in Indian states have witnessed significant rainfall, and there is a likelihood that this excess water might enter Bangladesh within the next two days.

This inflow of upstream water has the potential to exacerbate the flooding situation in the country.

With the possibility of continued heavy rainfall and the rising trends in river levels, there is a heightened risk of further floods, landslides and other related incidents.

The met office also forecasts light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at some places across the country.
