Flood-like situation prevails in greater Rangpur

RANGPUR, June 22 (BSS): A flood-like situation is prevailing in greater Rangpur as major rivers and their tributaries marked further rise due to heavy onrush of hilly waters flowing down from the upper catchments in India during the last 24 hours till 6.00 am this morning.
However, no rainfall was recorded in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts during the period, official sources said.
They said the situation is not yet serious but there are possibilities of quicker deterioration if the water levels rise further with rainfalls in the next few days.
According to the Water Development Board (WDB) sources, the major rivers and their tributaries are flowing just below their respective danger marks at all points this morning following further rises in their water levels during the period.
They said the Brahmaputra marked a further rise by 24 cm and was flowing only 66 cm below its danger mark at Chilmari point.
The Teesta marked a further rise by 8 cm and was flowing only 42 cm below its danger mark at Dalia point this morning.
The Teesta also rose by 3 cm and was flowing 190 cm below the danger mark at Kawnia point while the Dharla marked a further rise by 11 cm at Kurigram point and was flowing only 87 cm below its danger mark at 6.00 am today, the sources said.
The mighty Dudhkumar marked a further rise by 8 cm and was flowing only 56 cm below its danger mark at Noonkhawa point in Kurigram.
