Flood situation in Sylhet starts improving

The flood situation in Sylhet district has started improving and is expected to improve further during the next 24-72 hours, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said Saturday in its latest observation report, reports BSS.
However, it warned that the major rivers like the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, flowing well below the danger level (DL), but was on a rising trend following a rise at upstream after rains in Assam.
Similarly the Ganges-Padma, also swelled by the pressure of water at upstream, may rise at some points during the next 24-72 hours, the FFWC added.
It said out of its 63 monitoring stations only three rivers -- the Surma, Kushiyara and Kobadak -- are flowing above their DL, the FFWC report noted.
But the Meghna, which carries the combined flow of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma as well as the northeastern rain-fed rivers to the Bay of Bengal, is likely to fall by 4 cm at Bhairab Bazar and may flow 43 cm below the DL.
In its forecast for the next 24 hours beginning at 6:00 am Saturday, the FFWC said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna at Sirajganj is likely to rise by 12 cm and may flow 46 cm below the DL. Downstream at Aricha, the river is likely to rise by 7 cm but may flow 43 cm below the DL.
The Padma at Goalando is likely to rise by 6 cm and may flow 14 cm below the DL. It may rise at Bhagyakul by 5 cm and may flow 87 cm below the DL.
The Surma at Sylhet is likely to fall by 5 cm and may flow 60 cm below the DL, at Sunamganj it is likely to fall by 3 cm and flow 87 cm above the DL. The Kushiyara at Sheola is likely to fall by 12 cm and may flow 8 cm above the DL.
In its forecast during the next 48 hours, the FFWC said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna at Sirajganj is likely to fall by 4 cm and may flow 50 cm below the DL.
The Padma at Goalando is likely to rise by 1 cm and may flow 13 cm below the DL. At Bhagyakul it is likely to rise by 2 cm and may flow 9 cm below the DL.
The Surma at Sylhet is likely to fall by 7 cm and may flow 67 cm below the DL. At Sunamganj the river is likely to fall by 7 cm and may flow 89 cm below the DL.
