Flood situation in the country deteriorated further, as the major rivers in 20 districts are now flowing above their respective danger mark (DM), causing submergence of a vast area in the last two days, officials said.
They said the condition may turn worse across the country, if the water rising trend in the major rivers continues.
Sudden onrush of water from the rivers of neighbouring India and recent heavy downpour are causing the flood in parts of Bangladesh, where nearly 1.0 million people are leading hard times.
Many parts of Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Bogra, Sirajganj, Sherpur, Netrokona, Shunamganj and Chapainowabganj districts have been affected by flood and subsequent river erosion.
Nearly 17,500 hectares of Aman, Aush and vegetable fields have been submerged under flood water, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said.
"If the water prolongs for the next few days, the Aman and the almost-mature Aus crops will be severely affected in the flooded areas," Rafiqul Hasan, deputy director at DAE, told the FE.
"It is a matter of relief that water doesn't stay for a long time in the northern regions. Our officials in Nilphamari and Rangpur informed that the condition is improving there," he said.
However, an official at DAE, Rangpur Regional Office, said the condition is worsening in Kurigram and Gaibandha districts.
He said nearly 11,000 hectares of rice and vegetable fields have been inundated in Chilmari, Ulipur, Nageshwari and Kurigram Sadar upazilas in Kurigram in the last two days.
Another 1,500 hectares of farmlands at Sundarganj, Fulchhari and Gaibandha Sadar upazilas in Gaibandha have been affected by flood water.
"Nearly 0.15 million people in the two districts have been marooned," he said.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials in the district said the Brahmaputra and the Dharala rivers are flowing above their DM in four upazilas of Kurigram.
The Brahmaputra at Chilmari is now flowing above the DM by 13-15 cm, an official said.
"Although, the Ghaghot was flowing below the DM, it flooded a vast area in Gaibandha," he said.
Meanwhile, flash-flood and heavy rainfall worsened the flood situation in Jamalpur.
The Jamuna crossed the DM, and flooded nearly 300 hectares of farmlands and hundreds of households at Islampur in the district.
BWDB officials in Bogra said the Jamuna at Sariakandi in Bogra, at Islampur in Jamalpur and at Sirajganj Sadar are flowing above the DM by 11 to 67 cm.
The data of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) under BWDB, updated on Wednesday evening, showed that water at major rivers in Mymensingh and Sylhet regions are flowing above or near the DM.
The Kangsha was flowing above the DM by 43 cm at Jaria-jhanjail point, while the Surama in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts was flowing above the DM by 36-45 cm.
It also showed ten rivers were flowing above the DM, while another 13 rivers were about to cross the danger level.
However, flood situation was slightly improving in a few areas, according to FFWC.
The Teesta at Dalia in Nilphamari was flowing below the DM by 5 cm on Wednesday, which was above the danger level by 10 cm four days back.
