Flooding keeps worsening as rivers swell

FE REPORT | October 03, 2019 00:00:00

Flood situation deteriorated further in different districts on Wednesday due to rise in water-level in many major rivers, including the Padma, Gorai and Meghna, affecting thousands of families and their agricultural lands.

The situation worsened, as the Indian authorities concerned have opened all 119 gates of Farakka Barrage across the Ganges river in Murshidabad under West Bengal, causing heavy onrush of water from the upper stream.

At present, Chapainawa-bganj and Natore are the worst flood-affected districts.

The six major stations where the water is flowing above the danger-levels are: Goalundo, Sureswar, Kamarkhali, Hardinge Bridge, Meghna Bridge and Chandpur.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) measures water level in some 93 stations across the country.

It noted that the level of water is rising in 37 stations at 9:00 am on Wednesday.

The BWDB's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said water level in the Ganges-Padma river is showing a rising trend, which may continue to rise in the next 48 hours ending 9:00 am on Friday (tomorrow morning).

As a result, the flood situation in the low-lying areas of Pabna, Kushtia, Magura, Rajbari, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Munshiganj districts may deteriorate further.

It also mentioned that all the major rivers are showing a swelling trend, except the Brahmaputra-Jamuna.

The FFWC, however, said water-level in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Surma-Kushiyara rivers may fall in the next 48 hours ending 9:00 am on Friday.

Syed Shahidul Alam, executive engineer of the BWDB, said the Gorai and Meghna rivers are flowing 23 cm and 22 cm respectively above the danger level.

Substantial rainfall, both in Bangladesh and India, may contribute to aggravate the flood station further, he added.

Meanwhile, a significant volume of rainfall was recorded in the country during the last 24 hours ending at 9:00 am on Wednesday.

The FFWC said notable downpour occurred in areas like Sunamganj, Chattak, Jaflong, Sylhet, Kanaighat, Pabna, Dhaka and Barisal over the last 24 hours ending at 9:00 am on Wednesday.

Significant rainfall was also recorded in Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura states of north-east India during the last 24 hours, it added.
