Flooding worsens in some parts of country, eases in northern region

The flood situation deteriorated in some parts of the country with rise of water level in different rivers but eased in the north and north-eastern region Wednesday, reports UNB.brIn Bogra, a portion of a flood protection embankment was washed away by the raging flood waters while more low-lying areas in parts of the country would likely to be flooded. brThe latest bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said low-lying areas in the districts of Chandpur, Sirajganj, Tangail, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur; Dohar and Nawabganj of Dhaka, Shibganj and Sadar of Chapainawabganj are likely to be inundated in the next 24-48 hours.brThe bulletin also said the flood situation in the north and north-eastern part is likely to improve further in the next 24-48 hrs. brMeanwhile, the water level in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin started falling at all monitoring stations and is likely to improve further in the next 24-48 hours, the bulletin said.brReports from Sherpur, Faridpur, Goalanda (Rajbari) and Bogra said fresh areas went under floodwater in these districts while flood situation remained unchanged in Jamalpur.brIn Bogra, a portion of a flood control embankment of Water Development Board on the bank of the river Jamuna was washed away at Chandanbaisha Talukder Para in Sariakandi Upazila, flooding many areas of the upazila and neighbouring Dhunat Upazila early Wednesday.Locals said Kamalpur, Chandanbaisha, Kutubpur, Bhelabari, Fulbari, Narchi unions of Sariakandi Upazila and Gosaibari, Bhandarbari and Nimgachhi unions of Dhunat upazila went under floodwater after the embankment collapsed.brThe River Padma was flowing around 88 cm above danger level at Goalanda point in Rajbari district Wednesday, aggravating the flood situation. Train service was also disrupted due to the flood.brIn Faridpur, water levels of Padma, Arial Khan and Madhumati rivers rose Wednesday, inundating fresh areas.brAround 50,000 people have been marooned in Sadar, Bhanga, Sadarpur and Charbhadrason of the district during the current flooding.brIn Sherpur, over 100 villages of Sadar, Nakla and Sreebardi upazilas were submerged with the raging flood waters in rivers Dashani and Mrigi.brAnother report adds Bangladesh is eying a long-term flood forecasting technology that will help the Bangladesh Water Development Board forecast any possible flood 10 days before.brDr Peter Wester, a scientist of Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, has invented the technology, now being examined by Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC), Flood Forecast and Warning Centre (FFWC) of Bangladesh Water Development Board and other national agencies to have an idea about its effectiveness.brIf found appropriate this technology might help Bangladesh save its resources from the onslaught of flood, a regular phenomenon in the country.br
