Food inflation up, non-food down in July

The rate of inflation, led by food prices, rose to 11.42 per cent on a point-to-point basis in July last from 9.82 per cent in June 2007. The prices of food have risen in both local and global markets.
The rate of food inflation went up by 1.60 percentage points in July last over that of the previous month, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data, released Wednesday.
On the other hand, non-food inflation came down to 8.23 per cent in July last from 8.34 per cent in the previous month, the data showed.
The country's overall consumers' price inflation, however, crossed double digit and stood at 10.10 per cent on the point-to-point basis in July last from 9.20 per cent in June 2007 because of the rising the prices of the food items.
Besides, the inflation rate moved up to 7.49 per cent in July last from 7.20 per cent of the previous month on the annual average basis, according to the data.
"The inflationary pressure on economy has slightly gone up during the period due to the increase in prices of food items in the local market as well as in international markets," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE Thursday.
He also said the existing upward trend of inflation might continue in the near future because of rise in demand, driven by floods and holy month of Ramadan.
The pressure of food prices in urban areas was higher than in the rural areas during the period. Food inflation in urban areas stood at 12.48 per cent in July last against 10.71 per cent a month ago on the point-to-point basis.
In rural areas, food inflation also rose to 10.97 per cent in July last from 9.45 per cent in June 2007.
During the period, the general inflation in urban areas stood at 10.09 per cent on the point-to-point basis against 8.08 per cent while the inflation rose to 10.10 per cent from 9.14 per cent in rural areas.
