FE Report
The country's former finance and planning chiefs will share their experiences in policymaking and how they used to work under various pressures, including political, in a roundtable discussion next Thursday (September 6).
At least seven former finance and planning ministers and advisers are expected to participate in the discussion.
Finance adviser Mirza Azizul Islam will chair the roundtable discussion on "Policymakers and Policies: From the Past into the Future" in the city.
The Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) has organised the roundtable as part of the state-owned think tank's golden jubilee celebration.
"The idea of organising such an event is to provide a platform to the former policymakers to share their experiences with the incumbent, academics, researchers, and politicians," an organiser said.
"It will certainly be an interesting forum. The persons who took to the helms of Bangladesh's finance ministry had to work either under military regimes or democratic ones since the country's independence. So, they've many things to share with the audience," he added.
Organisers noted that the functions of finance ministers who were affiliated with political parties were different from their technocrat counterparts who seldom faced political pressure.
The sources said former finance ministers and advisers, who confirmed their participation, are M Saifur Rahman, M Syduzzaman, AMA Muhit, Wahiduddin Mahmud, Akbar Ali Khan, Shoeb Ahmed and Hafiz Uddin Khan.
Of finance ministers, M Saifur Rahman, who is affiliated with BNP, was the longest-serving finance minister in Bangladesh's history. AMA Muhit and M Syduzzaman served as finance ministers under Ershad.
