Four more children died from measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours as the situation continued to worsen across the country, said the health authorities on Friday.
With these, the number of deaths from such symptoms rose to 144 since March 15, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its daily bulletin.
In addition, the number of deaths from confirmed cases in this period was 23.
Meanwhile, 168 new confirmed cases and 1,177 additional cases of measles-like symptoms were reported in the past 24 hours.
The total number of confirmed cases rose to 2,409, and suspected cases to 13,497.
A total of 8,910 measles patients had been admitted to hospitals across the country since March 15.
Of them, 6,609 recovered and returned home, according to the DGHS.
Meanwhile, failing to get proper treatment/attention at various hospitals of outside districts, parents are now rushing in to the capital city to get their babies admitted to specialised public hospitals. In many cases, they are facing hassles of various types.
According to bdnews24.com, Two children undergoing treatment at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal with measles-like symptoms died in the last 24 hours, taking the divisional toll to 14.
Barisal Divisional Health Director Shyamal Krishna Mondal on Friday said the duo died on Thursday afternoon.
In the 24-hour span, 110 patients showing symptoms went to different hospitals, with 65 of them being hospitalised.
One of the children is 2-year-old Sadia, identified by a single name, a resident of Muladi Upazila.
The other has been identified only as Rakib, aged just 9 months, hailing from Banaripara Upazila.
A child with measles-like symptoms died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Another 20 children were hospitalised in the last 24-hour period.
The child died around 11:30am
on Thursday. MMCH Additional Director Mohammad Mainuddin Khan said on Friday morning the child was also suffering from other health complications in addition to the disease.
Three-year-old Abdullah was admitted to the hospital on Apr 2 with measles-like symptoms. He was the son of Md Rony and Arifa Akhter, who lived in Mymensingh city's Jamtola Mor area.
Mainuddin said 344 children with measles have been treated at the hospital since Mar 17. Of them, 262 have been released after treatment. Ten have died of the disease and another 72 are still at the hospital.
